This blog post is the first in a series of posts from our current Marketing and Communications intern, Kristina Hart.
February 10th marked the beginning of my journey with Assedo Consulting, LLC. My name is Kristina Hart and I am a senior undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park majoring in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations and minoring in Spanish. With it being my final semester of college, I have a very light class schedule so I knew that I wanted to find an internship to fill up my free time (anyone who knows me will tell you – I need to stay busy). After a few weeks of applying to jobs, I got the call back from Assedo saying I got the position as the communications and marketing intern.
I was slightly hesitant to accept the position frankly because I was intimidated. My past internship and job experiences have always been communications, public relations and marketing related, but they all dealt with sports and entertainment. While I hope to get a position in those industries after graduation, I was interested in working for Assedo because I knew it would give me the opportunity to further diversify my experience.
I came into my first day not knowing much about how the transportation, environmental and utility planning industries worked, but I was happy when I was quickly assigned tasks to dig into. I have found that social media and marketing strategies function pretty much the same way across multiple industries, with the goal being to effectively reach and engage with your audience. My assignments required me to do extensive research into Assedo’s social channels and expanded my knowledge about what messages and strategies work better across different platforms.
I love feeling that a lot of responsibility has been quickly put upon me, because I truly feel that is the best way to learn and improve my skills. I am excited to see the projects and plans I have researched come to fruition, and I am looking forward to learning more about Assedo each day.
